Description:
Generalised coordinates. Hamilton's principle. Calculus of variations and the Euler-Lagrange equations. The problem of Lagrange and the isoperimetric problem. Hamilton-Jacobi theory and Poisson brackets. Equivalent Lagrangians, canonical transformations and Noether's theorem. The module contains a large number of examples and applications in mechanics.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.

Prerequisite(s): APM212 or MAT215 or PHY201.
